How to organize 14 slot golf bag - for CARTS and TROLLEYS

golf related golf tips

A 14 slot golf bag is a great tool to have when it comes to the organization on the golf course. When every club in the bag has a place to go, you will protect your clubs and easily find them when you need them. The 14 slot golf bag is not hard to organize once you have a general idea of how this setup works and what makes the most sense for players. You can find both options below - the set up for a golf cart and for trolleys/carrying😉

How Is A 14 Slot Golf Bag Configured?

Most of the time, a 14 slot golf bag will usually have 4 rows of spaces for your golf clubs:

  • The top row has 3 slots,
  • followed by 2 rows of 4 slots,
  • and then another bottom row of 3.

Here is how you should configure your 14 slot golf bag:

Bottom Row

The bottom row is the one furthest away from you when you have the bag on the golf cart. This is where you will want to keep the longest clubs in your bag. Starting from left to right, put your driver, 3 wood, and 5 wood in the back row of the golf bag. (If you don't have a 5 wood you can put your longest hybrid).

Lower Middle Row

The second row is the place for the long irons and hybrids. This row has four slots, so it will typically see clubs such as the 3 hybrid/3 iron, 4 hybrid/4 iron, 5 iron, and 6 iron. Again, with this row, start on the left side of the bag and work your way to the right side.

Upper Middle  Row

The third row is an area of your golf bag that you will use quite often. This is where your scoring clubs are stored. As you have noticed, the clubs are also getting shorter as we move to the front of the bag. It does not make sense to keep the shorter clubs in the back as you won’t be able to see them when you need them.

In the third row, place the clubs like your 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, and pitching wedge. For golfers that carry fewer long irons and more wedges, you may have your gap wedge in this section.

Top Row

The top row typically offers space for two wedges and a putter. These are likely going to be the sand wedge and the lob wedge as well as the putter. The putter is the club that is used most often, and having it front and center are important for the speed of play and convenience.

Top Row

The top row is the one on top when you have the bag on the golf trolley. This is where you will want to keep the longest clubs in your bag. Starting from left to right, put your driver, 3 wood, and 5 wood in the back row of the golf bag. (If you don't have a 5 wood you can put your longest hybrid).

Upper Middle Row

The second row is the place for the long irons and hybrids. This row has four slots, so it will typically see clubs such as the 3 hybrid/3 iron, 4 hybrid/4 iron, 5 iron, and 6 iron. Again, with this row, start on the left side of the bag and work your way to the right side.

Lower Middle Row

The third row is an area of your golf bag that you will use quite often. This is where your scoring clubs are stored. As you have noticed, the clubs are also getting shorter as we move to the lower part of the bag. It does not make sense to keep the shorter clubs in the top part as you will have issues reaching them, plus the shorter clubs on top would hit the ones below them and damage them.

In the third row, place the clubs like your 7 iron, 8 iron, 9 iron, and pitching wedge. For golfers that carry fewer long irons and more wedges, you may have your gap wedge in this section.

Bottom Row

The bottom row typically offers space for two wedges and a putter. These are likely going to be the sand wedge and the lob wedge as well as the putter. The putter is the club that is used most often, and having it front and center are important for the speed of play and convenience.

Why Is The Layout Different For Carts And Trolleys?

Well first of all, you pull or push the trolley. This way it's better to have short clubs on the bottom side so they don't bother you when you're driving it around the golf course.

And secondly, the access to the clubs is different when using a cart or a trolley. The orientation of the bag is exactly the opposite on the stroller than on the cart. So if you want your pre-shot routine to be as smooth as possible, organize the clubs the same way as above and you'll see the difference 😉

Why It's Good To Have An Organized 14 Slot Golf Bag?

First of all, it's good to find the club in the exact slot where you have left it. Usually when we play golf we think about the shot, the strategy, course management and everything else that comes with it. So searching for the club in your bag can distract you from your game.

This brings us to the next reason to be organized. Even if you don't have 14 slot bag, or if you don't have all the slots filled with clubs (some play with only 11-12 clubs etc.), it's always good to have the clubs in the same slots. One of the reasons is that if you happen to forget the club on the previous hole, you can immediately see that a club is missing.

Another reason is that you should never carry wedges, putter and woods together. Woods are hollow and can get easily damaged by heavy contact with the wedge or putter.

What About A Golf Bag Without Slots?

What if your golf bag has less rows, or just 3 rows without any special slots? It's almost the same. Make sure you place the same clubs in the same rows and positions as with the slots. Maybe sometimes a 7i and 8i can switch places inside the same row, but overall the configuration stays the same.

Extra Tip: Use Headcovers For Woods!!!

use golf club headcovers with carts

I see a lot of recreational golfers play without woods headcovers, especially on carts. I understand, it's easier to take them off, it's more convenient. But clubs, especially woods can get damaged pretty easily. If you like your clubs and want to have them for another X years, take care of them. It costs you nothing but 3 seconds of your time😊

Conclusion

Golfers can configure a 14 slot golf bag in any way that works for them; however, there are some benefits to doing it the way I suggest. Keeping your golf clubs in strict order make it easy to access them at all times. In addition, you will always know if you have left a club behind if you give each one its own space.
